The Creative Bike
The Creative Bike Project explores how a bike can be used as a facilitator for social and creative practice, connecting young people with a tool for creative self expression and self realisation.
The bikes are designed to begin as a blank canvas. A bike can say so much about a child, the colours and shapes for example, but we shouldn’t force people into stereotypes. If a bike tells the story of a user, it should be their own story. The project allows users to express through an object that is traditionally associated with childhood. In doing so, this allows to exhibit who they truly are.
The project was developed through a series of workshops with a London based youth charity. During these workshops, the bikes were assembled and decorated. The sessions also involved maintenance workshops and cycle proficiency classes.
All bikes are functional, and were produced using traditional techniques
