HERMAN MILLER INSTIGATED A LIVE PROJECT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH, AND ASKED FOR A DETAILED DESIGN CONCEPT THAT WOULD SERVE AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO BRANCH OUT AND EXPAND THEIR WORK AREA RANGE.
SCHOOL TABLES ARE VERY OFTEN NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. THIS WAS EXPLAINED TO ME DURING A MEETING WITH THE FACILITIES MANAGER AT A LOCAL SCHOOL IN PLYMOUTH.
THE REASON WHY SCHOOL DESKS AREN'T FIT FOR PURPOSE IS BECAUSE THEY ARE CONSTRAINED TO GENERAL SIZES, WHILST CHILDREN GROW AT VARYING RATES.
THIS LEADS TO A SERIES OF NEGATIVE IMPACTS. FIRSTLY, SCHOOL DESKS WILL RARELY FIT A SCHOOL CHILD PERFECTLY, AND SECONDLY TO COUNTER THIS, SCHOOLS HAVE TO BUY FAR MORE DESKS THAN THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN JUST TO ENSURE EACH STUDENT HAS A DESK WHERE THEY CAN BE COMFORTABLE.

HOW IS THIS CONCEPT SUITABLE
AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
SCHOOL FURNITURE IS LIMITED BY BUDGET. FOR THAT REASON, UNLIKE OTHER HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE TABLES, IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR MY DESIGN NOT TO INCLUDE ANY MECHANICAL TO KEEP COSTS DOWN, WHILST MAINTAINING THE SAME FUNCTION.
MY CONCEPT ALLOWS STUDENTS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT HEIGHTS BY FLIPPING OVER THE TABLE TOP - A SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR AN EXTREMELY OLD PROBLEM.
